Free in body but not really in spirit

A writer has referred to Irish men who, fooled by jingoism and a hot meal, died fighting a British Imperialist war on foreign soil (Letters, November 4).

They certainly did, but those same methods were used with even greater success by the British ruling classes on their own citizens.

Their society was no different to those of the other protagonists in those wars.
