Free from Irish hell

•I agree with GG Dalton's letter that unwilling Leaving Certificate students could be relieved of the compulsory study of Irish for the purchase of an indulgence for release from their purgatory (Letters, September 23).

It may be the only way to get action. But GG Dalton should not be too hard on Fine Gael for failing to make Irish optional on the Leaving Cert. Remember, Ruairi Quinn, Education Minister, is from the Labour Party, which does not have freedom of choice among its policies.

Apart from that, any minister would shrink from telling the nation that the revival of Irish -- iconic project of the political elite for 90 years -- is a complete failure and was always a will-o'-the-wisp anyway.
