Forget the tribal view

Sir -- Tim Pat Coogan's (Sunday Independent, February 21) tribal mind-set should enable him to see that all the other teams in the Six Nations represent one tribe each with their own accepted anthem.

The Irish team, however, is made up of two separate tribes from two different jurisdictions, each with their own anthem. For one side to insist on its own anthem taking precedence is bombastic, intolerant and immature in the extreme. If Tim Pat feels so strong about this matter he should have the decency to call for the soccer arrangement and play as two separate rugby teams.

If we cannot show respect to our Unionist neighbours in these small matters, what hope is there for reconciliation between our two peoples on the larger stage?
