Fog in channel

• On foot of a warning from Vincent Browne last night, (May 16), I got up early to read the 'Guardian's' one trillion dollar damages headline. It would appear that, possibly for the first time in 60 years, an English Tory-led government is facing up fully to the fact that 'Britain' is not only not an empire any more but not even an island. Nor do even we Irish live on an island. We are all roped together.

The mainland Europeans may not take very kindly to a lecture from Mr Cameron, whose attitude to the Europe project ranges from the disdainful to the a la carte. Nevertheless, the forthcoming EU summit on May 23 must be used by all of us to make Europe work -- now. It shouldn't be used to schedule a set of further 'dithering summits' once a week for the rest of the calendar year.
