Madam -- I must take issue with Paddy Murphy's assertion in the letter section of the Sunday Independent (October 28), when he claimed that Germany's Focke Wolfe 190 was exclusively a fighter plane.
Like most fighter planes of WWII, they were adapted in both fighter and bomber roles. The FW 190 had a bomb load of 3,968 lbs, which was later reduced to 1,290 lbs. From airfields in France it enjoyed almost a free rein over Britain's southern towns. The plane underwent continuous development through the war years, and a clean (unarmed) version could outrun any plane put up to counter it.
