Flight of earls

• One thing we Irish have in abundance is a good name in welcoming people from afar -- if only for a short time. Yet every single year we send our politicians to parts all over the globe to celebrate the wearing of 'the Green' and the day of our patron saint.

We should be doing exactly the opposite. Why don't we invite the world to come to Ireland to celebrate March 17? Bring Washington, New York, Beijing and everywhere else to Ireland, instead of going to meet them in their homes.

Can you imagine the impact on airlines, hotels and the rest of the economy?
