Fire and rehire is nothing new

THE plan by Aer Lingus management to lay off and rehire staff on worse conditions of employment is not unique in Irish industrial history.

In the early 1930s a man named Todd Andrews was appointed chief of the Turf Development Board, now Bord na Mona.

One of his first acts was to sack all the engineers and then offer to re-employ them on worse conditions than they originally had.
