Far too many TDs
• I noticed your letter of the day today (July 4) raised the issue of the number of TDs that we have. For what it is worth, I am adding my tuppence to the debate.
The commission has suggested reducing the number of TDs by eight. Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has advocated reducing the number to between 70 and 80. The Fine Gael five-point plan prior to the last election advocated a reduction in the number by 20.
As a society we continue to use local TDs as a go-between, between ourselves and various Government departments. Anyone who has ever canvassed for a politician at election time will only be too aware of demands on the doorsteps for medical cards, places on social housing lists, expediting planning, and myriad other demands that should be the responsibility of the individual.
