Ethnic cleansing

Madam – I read with interest John-Paul McCarthy's (Sunday Independent, March 24) chilling account of the nefarious deeds of 'our brave and gallant soldiers', that one heard so much of as a child, as revealed in Prof O'Halpin's documentary, In the Name of the Republic.

Why, one wonders, did it take so long for these facts to come to light? Is it because the revelations surrounding the financial scandals loosened the political constraints on free speech and history teaching?

Whatever, it would seem, judging by the natural progression of myth destruction, that by 2016 we will have arrived at a position from which we can emphatically denounce them for what they were, or at the very least, admit that Irish Catholics ethnically cleansed their Protestant brethren.
