Equality swings in both directions
Eithne Reid O'Doherty's letter (Irish Independent, December 18) is confusing. She tells us, inter alia, that our current economic meltdown was fuelled by "the failure to have any regard to equality for women".
In support of this, she cites Article 41 2.1-2 of the Constitution, which states that mothers should not be obliged to work outside the home, and goes on to say that they are currently being denied this 'right'.
But this article is actually an example of inequality, in that it attempts to grant a right to women, while denying it to men in the same situation.
