English disliked still by Afrikaners
Kevin Myers' article on the seemingly universal dislike of the English (Irish Independent, June 2) reminds me of an incident 30 years ago.
It occurred in Kimberley, South Africa, where I was on a military course and shared accommodation in a tent with three other officers, all Afrikaans speakers.
On the Sunday before the start of the course the major in charge came into the tent and introduced himself. He was chatting to my companions when I heard a reference to "die Engelsman in die hoek" (the Englishman in the corner).
