Emigrants should be allowed to vote

I AGREE whole-heartedly with the recommendation of Martina Devlin that emigrants should be allowed to vote.

Ms Devlin notes that some opponents of the emigrant vote insist on the slogan, 'No representation without taxation', which she attributes to the American Revolution.

The American Revolution's slogan was actually 'No taxation without representation' -- and was a rallying cry for democracy.

It should also be noted that there are many ex-pats abroad who do pay taxes in Ireland -- the fact that they are accorded no right to vote in return gets little notice from the 'no representation without taxation' brigade.
