Education is not failing the young

As a member of the educational system and Ireland's 'dumber and fatter generation' I feel obliged to respond to some of the callous allusions made in your December 9 editorial.

One only has to look as far as the number of students who graduate from university to gauge the success of our system. Among young adults (25 to 34 years old), Ireland has the second-highest percentage with degrees -- 41.6pc, topped only by Cyprus. Not exactly a sign of the educational system failing its young people.

When you compare this to an EU average of 29.1pc it is very clear the educational system in Ireland today is not as bad as you claim.
