Don't bet on it
•I would imagine certain bankers, developers and, dare I say, politicians blanching as they read the Irish Independent, September 30.
A consecutive 18-month sentence was handed down to a gentleman who defrauded Paddy Power, the bookmaker (the only growth industry at present in Ireland). That Paddy Power never bothered to verify the gentleman's assertion that he had lodged the money when in fact he had not, says something about business in this little nation.
The judge has sent out a short, sharp message to fraudsters with this stiff sentence, bearing in mind that the vouchers concerned were of no face value and the amount lost to Paddy Power was less than €6,000.
