Disabled disc criteria works

Sir -- While I agree with the sentiment of Kathy Ward's letter (Sunday Independent, December 11, 2011), I fear it might reinforce the impression many have that disabled parking spaces are just for people in wheelchairs. A percentage of people with mobility impairments suffer from invisible disabilities -- indeed, they may be more impaired than some wheelchair users. The criteria to obtain a disabled parking disc are quite strict -- if somebody has got through this process, they should not be abused for using the facility.
