Dev's fine legacy

Madam -- I thought it quite ironic that in the week we are having a constitutional referendum, the author of our constitution was being attacked in John Drennan's piece in Life Magazine (Sunday Independent, May 27, 2012).

It was to be expected, of course, as Mr Drennan takes every opportunity to attack Mr de Valera on an almost weekly basis. I have no intention of defending the record of Mr de Valera over his long period of service to our State. I shall leave that to others better qualified than I. However, it would do Mr Drennan some good to read or reread the book, Judging Dev, by Diarmuid Ferriter.

It shows that de Valera believed that he would be unable to pay for his care and that of his wife when his term of office finished in 1973. Hardly what would be expected of a wealthy man.
