Democracy is under threat
Sir -- I write regarding Gene Kerrigan's article (Sunday Independent, November 7, 2010) on the policing of the student march. He described it as minor rowdiness. It may seem like minor rowdiness to him, but he was not hit by bricks. The Students Union organising the protest condemned the violence. Mr Kerrigan forgot to mention those responsible for the violence, namely Eirigi and left- wing anarchists. It seems he felt the gardai should take the punishment and not respond.
Mr Kerrigan is lucky to be able to write his column from the comfort of his office. He enjoys this freedom of speech and he should not forget the long list of gardai who gave their lives to protect democracy.
For 40 years they faced the guns of the IRA. Eirigi and their bedfellows still do not accept our democracy.
