Cutting salaries will 'dumb down' judges

I refer to the recent reports on the Government's decision to hold a referendum on the reduction of judicial salaries.

During my career, I have had cause to give evidence in almost every type of court in the land and I have come across many judges, senior and junior counsel. As in all professions, you will have the standard performers, the mediocre performers and the star performers and the same applies to the administration of justice in Ireland.

Leaving aside the obvious question of judicial independence, I would have a serious reservation that the scale of the reductions in judicial salaries as proposed by the Government will lead to a "dumbing down" of the quality of Irish judges appointed in the future.
