Croke hold

•With the impending budget in two weeks, we are into the usual season of economic-nimbyism. The chants of cut them, not me, come fast and furious.

The hike in VAT is going to be painful, so too is a cut in children's allowance. They are regressive. They hit the poorer in society harder.

What's the answer? Add to the income tax burden of those that already contribute more than 50pc of income tax? That is hardly equitable either.
