Comparison trivialises hacking scandal

I disagree with Ian O'Doherty's view that the News International hacking is somehow comparable to WikiLeaks (Irish Independent, June 13)

Firstly, the information Wikileaks obtained deals with institutions and governments, not ordinary citizens. News International targeted victims, their families and associates.

Secondly, WikiLeaks did not bribe or pay off members of the police or government bodies.

Thirdly, WikiLeaks is centred on official channels of communication, not private ones like personal email or home phones.

To equate the two is to trivialise the seriousness of the overreach committed by News International.
