Commandments are out of date
A LEAVY (Letters, March 20) says the 10 commandments are the basic precepts of "our laws and our political and social institutions".
The only commandments (Catholic version) which are law are the fifth and seventh. Thou shalt not murder and steal. I would venture to say that I don't need to be told that murdering and thieving are wrong.
The first three are purely about fearing and praising the supposed author of the commandments. Nothing lawful or moral about them. The ninth and tenth are the forbidding of thinking about other's people's goods (anti-capitalism), and women are lumped in as well.
