Sir -- Over Ireland at the moment there hangs a cloud of widespread worry and recrimination.

Well, despite the general gloom there are still many reasons to be positive about Irish society. So indulge me for a moment while I sing the praises of the men and women whose year-round efforts get so little mention in the general press, namely the coaches and mentors who instruct our kids in hurling, Gaelic football, soccer, rugby and other codes.

My own son is lucky in this regard. His sporting gurus display an exceptional sense of dedication and service. They show up rain or shine (or even snow), toting bulky gear bags not to mention an ever increasing load of paperwork. They give up countless weekends and weeknights, but in the end praise only the players for their commitment. And while they may enjoy winning, they stress sportsmanship overall.

If only our bankers and politicians had kept their eye on the ball in such a fashion.
