Cleaning up our public water system should be top priority
I fully agree with your correspondent Catherine O'Mahony's article regarding the matter of water charges ('I'll take my water refund, but I'd rather we had clean pipes and a safe supply', Irish Independent, July 20).
As a country that spends millions marketing itself as a tourist destination, it is very embarrassing to read on a regular basis about the latest area to have a boiled water notice or raw sewage being pumped into our coastal areas. Per head of population we must be the septic tank capital of Europe. I will not be seeking a refund for the water charges already paid and I don't believe that central taxation can pay for everything, unlike the pied pipers who urged the already disgruntled population that this was the case.
We have one of the lowest taxation systems in western Europe and yet we are led to believe by some politicians that it will cover everything.
