Church's weapon is a blunt one

The astonishing imbroglio the Catholic Church has landed itself in over the possibility that politicians might experience the sanction of excommunication represents a classic case of those whom the gods would destroy they would first set mad.

The 19th-Century land wars and the Civil War were the last time excommunication was used as an ecclesiastical weapon. Our bishops would do well to realise it was not at all effective and will fare no better today.
