Church's gender bias blinkered
Madam -- Gay Byrne's TV interview last week with former president Mary McAleese served as another reminder of how nobly this brilliant woman served the nation for 14 years and what an ambassador for all that is good about Ireland and the Irish she proved to be.
Listening to her perceptive words, I could empathise with her respectful approach to debating theological issues and matters of canon law, but one misgiving remained in my mind after the interview: for all her achievements and intellectual capabilities, Mary McAleese could never have been ordained as a priest in the Catholic Church. That door is still firmly closed to women.
While respecting the Church's right to its beliefs and doctrines, I can't help but wonder what kind of God could stand over a rule like that.
