Church must face reality on schools
Your reports on the ban of the ‘baptism barrier’ in Catholic schools (Irish Independent, June 28) are illuminating in the lack of questioning in the logic of the insular reaction of both the Catholic Church and mainstream politicians.
The argument is as follows: the pro ban group does not want the Catholic Church to offer places to “Catholic” students outside the nebulous catchment areas of schools, by which they exclude other faith students from within those areas. However, this group, the Government among others, wants to protect minorities by not imposing the same strictures upon their schools, which seems eminently reasonable.
The Catholic Church is up is arms, as is, predictably, Fianna Fáil, probably only because their raison d’être is merely to oppose rather than think.
