Brian McDevitt (Irish Independent, December 5) recommends reading 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens as an annual Christmas tonic. We, too, in our house, share that refreshment.

Many years ago the following passage, read aloud, really stopped the show.

It arises when Ebeneezer Scrooge is shocked to see the ghost of his one-time partner Jacob Marley suffering in chains.
