Charity watch

• The report in the Irish Independent (June 29) about charities provides a salutary insight into their opaque world of contrived secrecy and Machiavellian intrigue. It would also suggest, based on a sample of 30 from a population of 900, that some of the best paying jobs in Ireland are in the charity sector.

Mr Shatter's reluctance to implement the Charities Act 2009 and appoint a charities regulator is an unconvincing fig leaf for ingrained inertia and indifference, especially when the State provides hundreds of millions of euro to the charities sector.

Any government department worth its salt would routinely and systematically analyse the audited accounts of institutions and entities that receive taxpayers' money.
