One has to note a prevailing government attitude here of 'No, we can't'.
No we can't employ more than one in seven from the dole queue on the census because the Central Statistics Office has said it would breach recruitment principles of fairness, equality, openness and transparency (Irish Independent, April 4).
No, we can't force judges to contribute to their pensions because of the wording of the Constitution (drafted, no doubt, by elitist lawyers).
No, we can't expect the outgoing ministers of the last Government to have their multi-million euro pension pots capped under new regulations.
No, we can't dismiss useless bankers and regulators without giving them enormous severance pay, hamstrung by laws drafted by an elitist set.
We will remain at the bottom of our €70bn abyss until our attitude changes to 'yes, we can'.
