Celebrity drug article excellent
May I take this opportunity to congratulate Gemma O'Doherty on her most recent article on the 'celebrity' drug scene in Ireland (Irish Independent, May 29).
These celebrities, aka drug addicts, who have helped normalise cocaine-taking to such an extent that most turn a blind eye, have for too long conveniently ignored the salient points that Ms O'Doherty highlights, namely the "explicit link" between their drug use and the wholesale havoc wreaked on our communities by the illicit drug trade.
Furthermore, apart from the serious dangers associated with drug use, the article also states that: "Frequent users also experience anxiety, paranoia, disturbed sleep, mood swings, depression and suicidal thoughts."
This means that, in daily life, they are inflicting their insane behaviour on loved ones and colleagues.
Well done Gemma, may you continue to highlight the situation and tell it like it is.
These celebrities may be high profile but they are as much drug addicts as those on the street.
The only ones fooled into believing otherwise are themselves.
