Car-free zone first step for planners
Madam -- Now that Dublin has become such a car-friendly city, is it possible that the city's pedestrians could now get something in return? With the multi-lane Pearse Street on the east side and the multi-lane Patrick Street on the west side of the city, surely the centre could now be pedestrianised? Or must the road planners get it all their way?
It is time to grasp the nettle and just do it. Let us not forget that the Port Tunnel was built to divert heavy traffic away from the quays. Surely the overcrowded pavements on O'Connell Street, O'Connell Bridge, Westmoreland Street, College Green and Dame Street must be screaming something to the planners?
