Calories on tap

• I am regularly reading about the obesity problem in Ireland. Health Minister James Reilly wants restaurants and cafes to put calorie counts on menus. He is right. This should go a long way to solving our overweight problem.

Of course this problem directly affects the health of the nation and therefore costs the health services millions treating the problems associated with obesity and related illnesses.

The minister is also acutely aware and refers regularly to the alcohol consumption problem. Restrictions on alcohol advertising are being mooted. Alcohol-related health issues directly affect the health of the nation and cost the healthcare system millions of euro treating the problems associated with drinking too much.
