Breast still best
• The 'Time' magazine cover showing a child standing on a chair to breast-feed is only remarkable because Ireland now has the lowest rate of breast-feeding in Europe.
Only half of mothers leave Irish maternity hospitals exclusively breast-feeding their babies -- it's 93pc in Austria. Extended breast-feeding is rare in Ireland.
This is a great loss for mothers as well as babies. Breastfeeding cuts the mother's risk of breast cancer.
Low rates and short duration of breastfeeding are major contributors to the current high incidence of breast cancer.
