Blind obedience is no defence

Madam -- With reference to Paul McKeogh's letter (Sunday Independent, February 26, 2012), the Nuremberg Trials established that if you blindly obey an oath and commit a war crime, you are guilty. You only obey legal orders. People who put the love of country above the love of God will replace the Ten Commandments with blind obedience. They may then commit atrocities and will give the lame excuse that they were only obeying orders. The safety of the people of Ireland was more important than obedience to leaders who were blind to the dangers of Nazism. Standing alone, Ireland would have been taken over by the Nazis in a matter of hours. It is logical that many Irishmen of reason and decency would join the Allies to stop the Nazi military machine.
