Bertie's hindsight criticism is cheap

It was Taoiseach Bertie Ahern who, despite commendable achievements in other aspects, sowed the seeds of financial destruction pertaining today.

Mr Ahern admitted in 2009 that his decision in May 2002 to create the Financial Regulator was one of the main reasons for the collapse of the banking sector and "if I had a chance again I wouldn't do it" (Irish Independent, December 31).

Unfortunately for all of us, it was he who neglected to monitor his creation, a distinct new element of the Central Bank, and allowed it to become a 'monster'.

Remain in obscurity a little longer, Bertie! It's easy to lecture on correcting one's errors in hindsight.
