Beer pump politics
• Councillor Danny Healy-Rae's proposal to allow rural communities to drink and drive (Irish Independent, January 22) is a masterstroke of both parish pump politics and blatant self-interest – owning a pub in Kilgarvan, Co Kerry, had no bearing on his motion, of course.
What's more, of a council numbering 27, there were 12 no-shows, seven abstentions and the motion was carried by a majority of five to three, with the other four 'yes' votes including three fellow publicans and Healy-Rae's own son.

• The proposal on drink driving by Danny Healy-Rae reminds me of following.
Garda: "Have you been drinking, sir?" Driver: "Yes, 10 pints of Guinness and six Jack Daniels." Garda: "You best blow into the bag so." Driver: "Why, do you not believe me?"
