Barbarossa doomed Hitler
Madam – Eoghan Harris (Sunday Independent, May 26, 2013) quotes John Lukacs, who concluded, "Had Britain stopped fighting in 1940, Hitler would have won his war."
This is simply a wrong conclusion.
Where Lukcas's argument falls down is that, had Britain stopped fighting (in 1940), while it would undoubtedly have made a difference to the duration of the conflict, the end was always going to be the same. The moment Hitler launched Barbarossa, he was doomed, it was just a question of when. The Soviets had vast reserves of manpower, industries and oil and coal reserves, further East, which Hitler could never get to, given that his supply lines were already stretched too far, even to the 'relatively' close areas of Ukraine, etc.
