Bankers should suffer too

Madam – Having read Shane Ross's column (Sunday Independent, November 11, 2012), I couldn't agree more with him. The bankers have run this country into the ground, yet they still carry on unaffected by their own greed and incompetence while the rest of us have to suffer.

If a referendum is what's needed to limit pay and pensions for these people, then let's have it. While we're at it, let's also look at the pensions being drawn down by inept politicians who had a hand in this mess and many more besides. Let us bombard the Government with emails and letters until it gives us our referendum.

In a referendum these people will then have the chance to go before the electorate and explain why failure and negligence should be rewarded, and why they deserve to be kept in relative luxury until the end of their days, while up and down the country people are struggling to survive. Believe me, I can't wait to hear that one from their own lips.
