Back of the class

•I wish to draw attention to the ongoing situation that is facing newly qualified teachers. I myself am an unemployed newly qualified teacher, who also holds an MA in history.

Since I completed the course I have applied for in excess of 100 posts. I have been called to just two interviews, and have not received any acknowledgement from the vast majority of schools to which I have applied. This is very disheartening. I am now on Jobseekers' Allowance.

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn's initiative to rehire teachers who are going to retire in February before they receive cuts in their pensions shuts the door on newly qualified teachers. The level of cronyism apparent in the system is also quite shocking.
