Arise, King William the First of Ireland

I MUST commend Tom Cooper for not ruling out the possibility that William and Kate might one day become the king and queen of Ireland (Letters, April 27).

Imagine the lift it would give our down-trodden populous if we replace the 1916 centenary celebrations, which will commemorate the birth of a hundred years of intermittent recessions, with the pomp and ceremony of a royal coronation. We would be the envy of Europe; and if that wasn't enough to pacify over-zealous republicans, think of the apoplectic rage in Westminster as the British royal family is downgraded to AAA-.
