The article 'Is there a place for God in the Irish classroom?' (Irish Independent, February 18) overlooks the most fundamental ethical and legal issue at stake in this debate: the current system of church-sponsored schools is inherently discriminatory.
State monies are supporting schools whose admissions practices openly discriminate against applicants of the wrong faith, or no faith.
This situation is unacceptable. The alternative is simple and urgent; community schools that guarantee admission to all children within their districts and that teach ethical judgment rather than any particular religious faith.
