Appalling way to treat elderly
Sir - The article in last week's Sunday Independent entitled 'Patients put into nappies to free up care staff' described this practice of using nappies for our elderly as "demeaning and disturbing".
I regard this appalling practice as abuse of the elderly. An incontinent older person can be left anything up to 24 hours in a continence pad in their own urine and faeces.
This meets many of the indicators of abuse as set out in the Government's Working Group Report on Elder Abuse, Protecting Our Future, published in September 2002.
