Another stadium is missing a side
MAY I express my total dismay at the new Aviva Stadium? In this country, we can be quite boastful about our successful achievements, but we have had, for some time, what I refer to as the roundabout mentality.
This goes right back to the construction of the M50 when roundabouts where constructed rather than flyovers.
Then the Luas should have been an underground and, latterly, we have the phenomenon of three-sided stadiums.
All of these construction projects are the work of short-sighted and tight-fisted Fianna Fail-led governments.
The M50 is in the process of being upgraded to a three-lane motorway with flyovers.
Perhaps the Luas will, in time, disappear underground and eliminate all those on-street accidents and maybe we will get around to constructing our very first four-sided stadium.
Can you imagine the benefits if Croke Park and the Aviva Stadium had capacity for another 10,000 to 20,000 people?
Imagine the spin-off if we built a proper stadium adjacent to the 50-metre swimming pool. We might have launched a joint bid with Scotland for a future Olympics.
