Animal cruelty is a hidden shame
As an animal lover, I fully empathise with Ian O'Doherty (Irish Independent, May 28) on his revulsion and anger at the thousands of dogs that die every year in Irish pounds.
He quoted a figure of 6,500 deaths. Sadly the real figure is much greater if we factor in the unfortunate dogs euthanised at vets, and the far-too-numerous DIY jobs: shooting, drowning, hanging and so on.
People in animal welfare estimate the number of dogs that are put down annually to be closer to 20,000.
