Ambulance taxi

• I'd like to know what is the procedure with ambulances being called out to countryside locations to pick up alcoholics and bring them to hospital regularly?

I live opposite a family in the Galway countryside and the father, a man in his 50s, is regularly taken away in the ambulance and brought to UCHG.

The family's three cars sit outside the house while the ambulance makes the 15-mile journey from Galway city to pick him up. This happens at least three times a month. Surely, unless the man was in serious trouble, they could drive him in?
