Aid not fighter jets is the answer

After reading Kevin Myers' article on how Irish taxpayers are funding the Ugandan president's "squadron of Mach 2 fighters", instead of having a rant at the incompetence of the Irish Government and the state that our Emerald Isle now finds itself in (Irish Independent, September 3), I have a simple suggestion.

Why not give the Irish aid money to Irish volunteers working in Uganda who are willing to oversee the spending of our generous taxpayers' contributions on worthwhile humanitarian projects?

I and six of my primary school teaching friends spent our summer break volunteering at St Jude Children's Home in Gulu, Northern Uganda, this summer.
