Aid debate

• I was speechless on reading Eamon Delany's article ( 'We can't afford to give so much in aid', Irish Independent, October 27) regarding the amounts of money -- €636m -- going from (broke) Ireland to overseas aid.

He says almost 80pc of the money goes to Africa, where ongoing corruption and waste has been a major blight on international aid programmes.

This is like some sort of bad joke: we are borrowing money (and paying interest on it) to spend on overseas aid (where it may be misappropriated) and we are all paying higher charges and taxes to fund this, while the sick, elderly and disabled suffer.
