•I had the strangest feeling once I heard it confirmed that there would be seven candidates for president. It was a feeling that has ebbed and flowed over the past few days as various elected representatives, at national and local level, used and abused their positions for both noble and hypocritical reasons.
But finally, the will of the people to have those seven candidates on the ballot paper was met. So was that feeling disgust, that some representatives used every stroke in the book to prevent candidates being selected? Or was it a tiny, almost imperceptible tinge of pride that there is still a glimmer of hope that the Irish political system might yet be redeemed?
It's too early to say which.
