Accept tenets or leave Church
Madam -- "Is the Church a club with rules you accept or leave?", asks Colum Kenny (Sunday Independent, June 10). Replacing the word "club" (which I find offensive) with religion, then the answer is an emphatic yes.
Those, like Mr Kenny, who reject the doctrine of Transubtantiation, and by extension the Mass as the re-presentation, or making present again, of Calvary, are already outside the fold as these are central tenets of not just the Roman Catholic Church but of her sister Orthodox churches.
Using science in an attempt to undermine what are sacred mysteries is a non-starter. While the "accidents" as defined by Plato (taste, smell and so on) remain the same, the inner reality, or substance changes. So, at the consecration, the bread and wine are annihilated to become the body and blood of Christ.
