Abuse of power is a human issue

Madam -- Maire Ni Mhurchadha (Letters, Sunday Independent, July 15, 2012), said that because our political system recognises "the legal equality of birth of all citizens" Ireland is a "republic, where governing representatives are elected... by the public".

In contrast, in the same paper Gene Kerrigan, making a case for fundamental reform of our political system in the proposed Constitutional Convention, proclaimed that "most of us agree that the current political system is a useless, inefficient crock designed to meet the needs of political parties" and that "lack of democratic accountability is part of the reason the country is broken".

I agree with Maire Ni Mhurchadha and disagree profoundly with Gene Kerrigan.
